Fans of Tuck Everlasting rejoice—the book that’s been ten years in the making is here and it’s well worth the wait! From Newbery Honor author Natalie Babbitt comes a swashbuckling tale of adventures everywhere but the high seas!
What’s a pirate who’s not very good at plundering to do? That’s what Jack Plank needs to figure out when his crew abandons in the Caribbean town of Saltwash to find work. But this landlocked ex-pirate isn’t suited to be a farmer, fortune-teller, fisherman, or anything else, for that matter. However, he can tell a tale. But that won’t pay the bills…or will it? Luckily, his new friend eleven-year-old Nina helps him realize that things have a way of working out—especially when you least expect it! (Ages 9-12)

Who doesn't love a pirate - especially a polite, respectable, friendly one! I use this book in class (3rd and 4th grade) to teach story elements such as character, wish, problem, and problem resolution. (It works especially well with Project Read's Story Puzzle.) Not only do we plot the resolution of Jack's problem (the main character), but every chapter is a different short story as told by Jack which can also be used as its own problem/problem resolution mini lesson!
Jack also makes a great character study as he has so many qualities not typically found in a pirate - manners, respect, fairness, etc.
Best of all - the kids love this book!
