The Hobbit

Can you believe it? The Hobbit is 73 years old--and yet it remains as fresh and evocative as the day it was published. Originally intended to entertain Tolkien's own children, it has been beloved through the decades by young and old alike, and is today considered one of the most important books in the fantasy genre.

Why? Perhaps because the world of The Hobbit was built on a plausible foundation and operated by rules readers could believe in. Tolkien drew on his knowledge of early English languages, mythology and runic magic to give his land of Middle-earth a history and logic that not only sustains readers' beliefs, but which has influenced countless imitators.

And he told it all with a peerless wit and style.

The Hobbit is the story of Bilbo Baggins, a respectable member of a race of little people called hobbits. Now, like many of his kind, Bilbo cherishes comfort and spurns adventure of any sort. But that will all change when Gandalf the wizard scratches a sign in his door, and the hobbit is besieged by thirteen ravenous dwarves. The next thing he knows, Bilbo is off on a perilous quest to reclaim a stolen treasure from the dragon Smaug, a quest that will lead him to a creature named Gollum and a very magical ring....

I love Tolkien. His world is awesome. I have read this book so many times. The movie will be so epic. I'm ordering a new copy as I've worn mine out.

Fantastic - The Beginning to a Great Storyline
February 08, 2012

I read the hobbit many years ago and then came across Lord of the Rings and was thrilled with the Lord of the Rings movies. I have heard they are making the hobbit into a movie and that should be terrific. This book is just as good the second time around as it was when I first read it.

A classic. I've borrowed this book from the library many times since I was a child, and I needed to buy a copy for myself. If you like the lord of the rings, you'll like this book.

One of the great fantasy epics -- a true classic
February 22, 2010

I first read The Hobbit as a teenager and have reread it every few years since. This is one of the books that started the fantasy fiction craze we know know and love and virtually invented high fantasy. No one builds worlds and characters better than Tolkien. With a wide variety of creatures and humans, the book is an adventure quest about much more than just a stolen treasure, it is about Bilbo Baggin's quest to be special and escape from his ordinary life. Tolkien takes us so deep inside his characters' heads that we relate to them as if they were ourselves. We share their passions, their pains, their struggles and their longings, and, as a result, the book resonates long after we turn the last page and close the cover. The characters remain with us for a lifetime, and we are never the same. This is one of the greats, and highly recommend. Most readers will be truly delighted!
